When Stephen King wrote the novel, The Shining, he was likely not aware of what a true terror masterpiece it would be. This book had millions of people terrified to be alone in the dark. This terror became even more intense when the movie came out during the early eighties.
The film was released during the spring and terrified watchers during the entire summer. It was so successful that people were actually memorizing the lines and phrases. In the end the flick won many nominations and one award from the academy.
The storyline involved a character named Jack Torrance, his spouse, and son. After succumbing to alcoholism he takes his family to live in a large, haunted Colorado hotel. There he will act as caretaker during the off season when there is nobody living in it. The job seems like a great way to get away, but they will soon realize the buildings horrifying past.
Danny, the couple’s child, is already aware that something is not quite right. He had visions of tragedies that had taken place years earlier. His special gift had warned him about the evil that was waiting for his family. After the group moves in those prophecies begin coming true.
One reason for the success of this movie was the ever present Jack Nicholson. He brought forth a presence that nobody else could have created. Many people began thinking that he was a mad man in reality due to the realism of his portrayal.

The Shining is full of many memorable highlights. The chilling scenes are still embedded in people’s memories. Some people continue to have bad dreams years after seeing the film.
One especially creepy moment was when Danny had a vision and began repeating the phrase redrum. It did not take his terrified mother very long to realize that it was murder spelled backwards. His words are still haunting those who saw the movie.
Anyone who has seen this flick cannot forget the ghostly encounter Danny had with the previous owner’s dead twin daughters. He was riding his back through the hotel when he stopped dead. Danny sensed something was wrong as he entered, but had no idea of the terrifying ghost who sat naked in the bathtub, waiting to get hold of him. Upon investigation, Jack found nothing but a beautiful presence which set forth to seduce him. Afterwards, the evil began permeating him and he soon embarked on a mission to kill his wife and child.
As the sinister presence began taking over Jack’s body, his spouse became aware that something was just not right. It did not take her and Danny long to realize that he was pure evil. The climax came when he busted through the door with an ax in an attempt to murder both of them.
The Shining offers everything a true horror film should. For anyone who is tired of the blood and gore that is offered up by newer films, this classic flick is a great one to watch. Be aware that nightmares are likely after watching this terrifying movie.
