The largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban is also the third largest city in the country of South Africa. The city had humble beginnings as a small port, only home to a few British settlers in 1823. Surviving much fighting and strife it has grown to become the biggest container port in Africa, and a well visited tourist destination. Shopping is a good way to spend time in Durban, with large malls such as Warwick Mall, or the Pavilion offering nearly 300 different kinds of shops. If, however, you are looking for something a little more authentic, then there are plenty of weekend markets, or flea markets where you can buy handmade goods, flowers, leather and fresh fruit and vegetables. If you want something a little more high brow, however, then you can buy original art from the African Art Centre.
If you want to see some nature, then Crocworld is a great place to visit. It is home to over 10,000 crocodiles and over 200 different species of birds too. You can see the beautiful Fish Eagle, whose name is Isis, as well as the oldest and heaviest crocodile in captivity. Fish, snakes and flamingo′s are also there to be seen along with a fresh water aquarium.
The Durban Botanical Gardens, originally set up in 1849 for commercial crops, has become a vast collection of tropical plants. You will see plants from Africa, Asia and America, with amazing collections of orchids, palms and cycads. Why not spend an afternoon there with a picnic?
The beaches are also a popular sight in Durban. The most popular of the beaches is South Beach which has wonderful soft golden sand and warm waters. It can tend to get over crowded so make sure you get there early. Other good beaches include the North Beach and Addington Beach, all with similarly beautiful characteristics.
