New York City. The Big Apple. The Empire City. Many monikers have been bestowed on the worlds (arguably) most famous city. All of them appropriate in some way, after all, a city with a history as rich as New York′s is bound to end up making an impression on all who have traveled there, lived there, or left there…coming up with a nickname for a city would indicate that there is indeed something very endearing or memorable about the place. So what, exactly, is it about NYC that can elicit such behavior from its visitors or denizens? The history? Culture? Attractions? Food? Location? Actually, it’s a combination of all of those ingredients and countless others that are just as intangible. There is a certain mystique about NYC – even those who have lived there their whole lives there are aware of it. To someone who has never been there, NYC can be experienced vicariously through literature, film and television. And while all of those mediums are capable of projecting an image and a feel that can be quite palpable, nothing can ever quite prepare an uninitiated individual for their first trip.
It should be acknowledged at this point that there is simply no way to convey the experience effectively other than as an in-person firsthand experience. Rather than devote any time to discussing getting to and from NYC, instead the sole focus here is things to do and see and experience that are available to anyone who travels to the metropolis known as NYC.
Once you′ve been in the city for a day or two (and it will likely take at least a day to get acclimated to the surroundings) and the initial all-encompassing sense of awe you′ll experience begins to wear off, you can hit the streets running. While it may seem like a great idea pre-trip to make an itinerary of places to go and things to see, any such plans can be abandoned once you are there. Even the best of intentions will be put aside once you realize just how much there is to see. And do. And Eat. And on and on.
Here is a small sample of some of the things you′ll want to do in NYC:
- Walk. Anywhere and everywhere. NYC is easily traversed by foot; anywhere you want to go can be walked to. Cabs are readily available at all times, so you may want to spend the day walking and then take a cab back to your accommodations in the evening.
- Take a cab. Directly related to the above. Taking a cab in NYC is an adventure unto itself – if possible, hail a cab between 4-6pm for the full effect.
- Street food. As in pizza, hotdogs, giant pretzels and the like. You′ve likely seen these things being casually consumed in countless movies and TV shows – try them all and decide for yourself which culinary street treat is best.
- MSG. No, not the food additive, the world famous sports/events center located at #2 Penn Plaza, between 7th and 8th avenue. If you can manage it, it is highly recommended that you attend a Knicks game or a Rangers game. Even if you aren’t a sports fan, the experience is something everyone should feel and see at last once. There are numerous theaters located through the building and world famous musical acts perform there quite regularly for those who absolutely cannot stand sports.
- Times Square. Just like it looks in the movies and on TV, only bigger, louder and more crowded. The foot traffic moves very quickly and quite mercilessly at times, so try to stay aware of your surroundings as you gawk at the immense amount of sensory overload that is literally everywhere you look. Watch out for the naked, singing cowboy.
- The Empire State Building. First made famous the world over in 1933′s “King Kong”, this is still one of the most well know tourist destinations in the entire world. No matter what time you go there you won’t be the only person who wants to go up to the 86th floor observatory, so be prepared to stand in line while waiting to take the tour. Even if you have a pathological hatred of waiting in long lines, this is one time you′ll actually be glad you did.
- Grand Central Terminal. This, again, is a must see that also provides a wonderful look at NYC’s past. You don’t need to be taking transportation to anywhere to go and experience grand central station. Step inside and look up at the ceiling – the ceiling murals are amazing! Go to the lower level and choose from any number of famous NY foods (go to the Oyster bar!). Take a tour of the elevated walkways for a breathtaking view of the concourse. As with any place else in NYC, foot traffic moves fast in grand central terminal, so keep your head up!
Further NYC articles will delve deeper into the hundreds of other locations, attraction and activities – while the list above may seem like a lot, the activities and locations discussed in this article really only scratch the tip of the proverbial surface in the “City that never sleeps”.
