A Guide To The LG Optimus

by Mark Walters on August 30, 2010

The LG Optimus is one of a new generation of LG phones that will attempt to try and develop the company’s share of the ever popular smartphone market. The LG brand has always proved popular with mobile users, but can this new smartphone compete with some of the established heavy-hitters in the market?

The Optimus is another example of LG’s ability to make good looking phones. The phone’s design and quality finish mean that, not only will you be more than happy to be seen using it, it is easy and comfortable to handle when you do; and even with a decent sized touchscreen, the phone is easily carried in your pocket or purse.

There are smartphones which are available with bigger screens than the Optimus, but at 3 inches it can easily cope with webpages, images and movies, without it feeling like it′s not big enough. The display is bright and clear, and the Optimus’s accelerometer makes the touchscreen simple to use, whichever way up you want to hold the phone.

As well as the standard connectivity options, including 3G and the latest Bluetooth, the Optimus is capable of wireless networking, just like many of the other smartphones. It also provides you with a fast and simple way to get connected to their favorite social networking sites, with pre-loaded features that keep you in touch with real-time updates from fans and followers on Facebook and Twitter.

LG looks to have decided on Android as their operating system of choice for their smartphones, and whilst the Optimus comes with the slightly outdated version, it still has the functionality most will need in a basic smartphone. Plus, with Android you can take full advantage of the Android Market, and the technology inside the Optimus means it′s performance and battery life will let you make the most of the apps you install.

The Optimus only has a 3 megapixel camera, which does let it down slightly, but it still performs well in most environments, especially with the autofocus making things easier. The lack of a flash and video capture at only 17 frames per second isn’t ideal, but it won’t stop most people getting what they want from the camera.

The likes of Apple, HTC and Google are not going to be overly worried about the challenge from the LG Optimus, but this would probably suit LG just fine. It can’t, and isn’t meant to, compete with the top smartphones. Instead, it is meant to be an affordable smartphone that offers most people what they want something it does very well.
